1 EC. To receive this, students will read two secondary sources and write an essay of 1000-1500 words.

This class will examine and discuss medieval manuscripts and their bindings. The materials and techniques used to make these objects will be looked at in detail; material aspects affect the functionality of the book and may provide information about its provenance and historical or cultural context. In addition, non-contemporary interventions (later repairs and conservation treatments) will be part of this introduction into the materiality of the medieval book.

        Students will learn how to distinguish the different bookbinding types made in this period

        Students will be shown how to systematically examine the composite structure of medieval manuscripts

        Students will learn about the various characteristics of the materials and methods in bookbinding – and later interventions.
