Two Course Units for PhD- and Research Master's students

Course unKépes Krónikait 1: The Source Course
The Hague (Royal Library & National Archives) 24-25 May 2012

The first compulsory course unit in the training programme of  the Netherlands Research School for Medieval Studies,  the Source Course,  for PhD students   - also open to Research Master’s students -  focuses on the heart of each research project: sources. The course unit brings students up close and personal with a great number and variety of medieval sources and teaches them how to deal with these sources. The focus is on how various disciplines deal with the sources that are important to them, which answers they look for in these sources and which results thorough examination of a source may yield. The course unit consists of two components: a Master class (24-25 May) and a follow-up day (late August 2012).

Course unit 2: ‘Foundations of Own Research’
Utrecht 7-8 June 2012

As the title suggests, this course unit focuses on the students’ own research. It is intended for PhD students in the second year of their appointment. As a starting point for the discussions, each student must write a paper (c. 5000-6000 words) about one or several central problems in their research, for example with regard to methodology, source selection, the nature of the problem definition, etc.
The course unit will comprise a one or two-day meeting (depending on the number of participants) and a follow-up day a few months later.
